Hugo 1989
- It was September the 17th, one windy day
When Hugo came whistling, a visit to pay.
All of us didn't expect to see
Such a terrible Hurricane on land and on sea.
- Hugo struck us, with all his might,
With terrible force, all through that night.
Destroying our homes and mansions dear,
Which just before were bright and fair.
- St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John were hit.
Hugo did everything bad he saw fit.
Roaring like a monster all that night,
Hugo didn't spare anything in sight.
- Our highways looked like a real war zone,
Trees uprooted, hundreds of years old.
Telephone and electric poles for miles around
Were either leaning, or fallen on the ground.
- Buses upturned, an airplane in the street,
Hugo's wrath, nobody could beat.
A boat in the road on your way downtown
Told of the damage that Hugo had done.
- Hugo battered these Islands loose and fast,
Breaking windows and smashing glass.
Galvanize was flying like birds through the air.
Hugo and his whole family must have been here.
- Hugo wrecked businesses, colleges, hotels galore,
Churches and hospitals, and many more.
These Islands were a shocking sight to see
When Hugo left us. A demon was he.
- But the worst part of it all, my friends, listen to this.
I spent that night with my sister, which was a great risk!
For when Hugo tore the bedroom roofs clean off the house,
God bless that little bathroom that saved our lives.
- We stayed there till Hugo was almost gone,
Not knowing if we would live to see the next morn.
While Big Clarence wrapped his belt buckle around the door knob
To keep it from opening, I sat close to the tub.
- But that door just kept opening again and again
And I happen to peek out, amidst the wind and the rain.
To see no roofs on the bedrooms was not a surprise.
I knew it had to be Satan, in Hugo's disguise.
- It was five-thirty that morning when we opened the door.
Hugo was still raving - a little less than before.
And through a little window by the side of a shelf
My sister began calling to my brother for help.
- "Come help us," she screemed out. "We need help down here."
But my brother had already started to come down there.
So he and his sons and some other young man I didn't know
Took us all up to his house. There was no other place to go.
- These Islands have never experienced such a plight
As when Hurricane Hugo struck us that night.
Everybody suffered, regardless of wealth.
Hugo was the worst Hurricane we have ever felt.
- But while Hugo was raving, our loving Father above
Was watching his children with a heart full of love.
Let us give Him the glory, sing praise to His name
For saving our lives from Hugo's domain.
